Five Bookish (and Not so Bookish) Thoughts

"Bookish (and Not so Bookish) Thoughts" is a meme created by Christine over at Bookishly Boisterous. I'll admit to not having read much of her blog yet, but this is such a fun idea, and I've seen a lot of my blog friends using it lately. Also, I'm sure many of you have noted my silence lately, so I thought posting this might explain some things and get me started again. So, (in no particular order) here goes!

1) Gabe is so big now! Three and a half years old...it's insane. The picture above is from his recent trip to the dentist for the first time, which went really well. I was worried that he would be worried (typical first-child business), but the dentist and nurses made it really fun for him. He's almost fully potty-trained (thank God for that) and showing a distinct interest in learning how to read. He is such a perfect mix of Tony, me, and his own little flair. Every day I'm amazed by him.

2) Tony's Grannie recently had heart surgery, and we've been spending a lot of time with family sorting some things out. It's a very tentative, stressful situation. I know I don't usually talk about a lot of personal issues on here, but I felt that my inattention to the blog has been telling and there's no harm in connecting with some of my favorite online buddies. You guys are awesome. I'm hoping that her healing process will be smooth and not quite so worrisome in the near future.

3) Speaking of the future, Tony just started his senior year toward a B.S. in Computer Science! I am so proud of him for everything--transitioning from the Army, switching majors to do what he loves, excelling in school while helping me raise our little boy...it's a lot. And this also means we're probably moving in a little less than a year. I'm making a lot of emotional as well as practical decisions right now about what I want to do next. It's a lot of pressure but also exciting! Who knows where we'll end up or what will be next for us!

4) Time to get positive! I received this little beauty in the mail last week! By far my favorite cover for A Room with a View by E.M. Forster!

5) I discovered a children's picture book by J.R.R. Tolkien the other day titled Mr. Bliss! I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I ordered it immediately and, come on, you can't go wrong with Tolkien!

I guess that's enough for now. I hope I didn't bum you guys out too much! Thank you for being patient with me. I have six or so unfinished book reviews waiting for you all to see them, so I hope I can find some time and energy to finish and post those soon. Have a wonderful day!

  1. I just heard about "Mr. Bliss" a couple weeks ago, and am hoping to pick up a copy soon myself. It looks so cute!

Potty training is evil. I'm almost through with it with my 3 3/4-year-old, and I'm so happy it's nearly done with.

    1. Yeah, I just received mine! Haven't had a chance to read through it yet, but it looks pretty cute. It has one side with the illustrations and writing in Tolkien's hand, and the other side is the words typed out for clearer reading. :)

Oh, potty training. (sigh) We have everything down except nights now, and the occasional accident, of course.

    2. Nights, bah. My 7-year-old is still in Underjams. I hate it when people act like until kids are dry nights too, they're not "really" potty-trained. Nonsense.

    3. Agreed. I feel like it's normal for kids to have accidents at night for a long time, especially boys. Not worried.

  2. - Bookish and Not So Bookish is great! It's a really handy way of getting all of my various ravings and flailings out I find :D I still haven't done much looking around on Christine's blog either though. I really need to rectify that.

    - Gabe is a cutie patootie! :)

    - I love 'A Room with a View' and I read that copy of the book as well! Mine was a library book though and now I'm trying to find that edition for myself. I haven't seen it in any stores though so I think I'm going to have to buy it online. I'm hoping to read another E.M. Forster book fairly soon as well: 'Howards End'.

    1. Yes, I know what you mean!

Thanks! He's 50% my genes, so I can take credit for that, right? ;)

I don't have my copy on me right now, but I'll check the ISBN when I get a chance and post it here for you. Maybe that will help with the search. It's just so beautiful! I've seen a movie version of Howards End with Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins, but it was a long time ago. I should read it, too.

    2. Thank you so much for the offer but I've literally just found it myself and bought it online. Sorry for the late reply. I can be extremely scatterbrained; as in I reply to things in my head and then forget to actually write them down!

    3. Don't worry about it; I do the same thing (hence the late reply to your comment and never actually posting the ISBN)!

  3. It's really nice to learn a little bit more about your life via this 'meme' and really great to see your son! Hope you'll keep doing the 'Bookish and Not So Bookish' posts in the future!

    1. Thanks! It's a nice way to share some things with you all. I think I will try to do them more.

  4. I love that cover for A Room With A View! Beautiful! :) And Gabe is adorable. So glad his trip to the dentist went well! I truly dislike going myself, so I'd've been worried for my son were it me. Yay for nice dentists and hygienists! :)

I hope Tony's grannie is doing ok. That's hard.

How have I never heard that Tolkien had a children's book?! Will look forward to hearing your thoughts on it! :)

    1. I'm not personally afraid of dentists, but I know a lot of people are. I'm always nervous that Gabe will gain some sudden aversion to doctors, but so far, he's been good! We always try to act like it's no big deal, "Oh yeah, and tomorrow you get to see the doctor! Won't that be fun!" :) I guess it's working.

She's still a little weak but doing much better. Thank you.

And yes, neither had I! I'll be including it in a Bitsy View post soon, but I haven't read it yet. Gabe is on a Sandra Boynton kick for bedtime right now.
